The Puffer family has been growing and harvesting award winning oysters in Wellfleet since the 1970′s
Irving Puffer, who grew up in Wellfleet has worked in the fishing industry since the age of 17, working the towns shellfish beds and on commercial fishing boats. A shellfish bed is a designated shoreline area leased from the town. The farmers have exclusive use to grow their shellfish. When Irving first began, the primary crop grown in the beds were oysters.
During the 1980′s the farming operation expanded to include Quahog or hard shell clams. Quahog seed were planted in the beds for littlenecks and cherrystones. In 1989 Irving and his wife Holly formed Wellfleet Oyster and Clam Company, LTD. They continue to grow and market the finest shellfish produced, selling to wholesalers and restaurants throughout the country.
